Mesendorf is an isolated village which has very strong German features. This church was turned into a stronghold with two levels of fortification. At the moment, there is a gallery open to the general public, on the west tour. The Mesendorf Fortified Church is a Saxon heritage of medieval Transylvania. The locals are very friendly and the houses are beautiful. The whole village and the congregation deeply care about their church. It used to have a tower where the whole village kept its meat. There was only one key and they would open the doors every Sunday. However, each person could only get just enough for a week for oneself and for the family.

The amazing atmosphere of the Mesendorf village is surrounded by a very old legend. The mountain of Kazkes situated nearby, is said to be home of an evil spirit: the canter. Whoever dares to go on the mountain at night will presumably be haunted by this evil spirit. The best part is that you won’t have to worry about that as the Church is only available to be visited during the day. 🙂
